Mr. Meier reports on his experiences with the treatment of his uveal melanoma at the Cyberknife Center Munich. Germany's first Cyberknife Center in Großhadern has been successfully treating patients with tumors and metastases since 2005. The device used in Munich uses digital imaging and robotics to treat benign and malignant tumors with unique and highly precise submillimeter accuracy.

My name is Olaf Meier, 52 years old, and I am a self-employed master craftsman.

When did you first learn about your medical condition?

Last February – or last January –, I noticed that I was losing some of my vision in the right eye. I went to see an ophthalmologist and the scan showed a shadow in my eye. I was referred to a clinic in Hamburg and was told that my only option was to remove the eye entirely.

They did not give me any information on alternative options. Only through my own research did I come across the Cyberknife technology. I called the Cyberknife Center, and they put me in touch with Dr. Liedl at the University Hospital Munich. I told him about my condition and what had been diagnosed so far.

What exactly were you diagnosed with?

I was diagnosed with uveal melanoma.

Could you describe the course of treatment?

Sure. On the day of my treatment, one of the medical assistants accompanied me upstairs and they asked me what music I liked. I'm big on Metallica so that's what I went with. Some of the staff said: “Finally, some decent music in this place.” So they put it on, I laid down, 30 minutes went by – and I did not feel a thing. It was all very calm, I almost fell asleep. Then I had to take two pills and went home.

Was the treatment successful?

Just today I came by for a follow-up and was told that the tumor is inactive – exactly what we wanted. The doctors I've heard from so far are very happy with the results. I would like to thank them and the entire team at the Cyberknife Center. From the second I entered the building, they made me feel comfortable.

As I have mentioned, I am self-employed. So, let me take the perspective of a customer. I'm a regular patient, yet around here I felt more like a valued customer. Right from the get-go, from when I first called – even in the first ten to twenty seconds – everything was just spot on. And the great experience on the phone was only continued by the doctors.
